Scared Space: Embracing Creativity as a Spiritual Practice

“Protection of Jophiel” digital art by Nataki Bhatti

I am sharing with you, a discipline I did not choose, but rather, it chose me. Everyday, I have to use my physical nature, and express my heart, to express something. It could be digital art on my phone, a painting on paper, a repetitive movement with my body, using my hands in rhythm to crochet and/or writing 1000 words daily.

Many years, I used a philosophical foundation in African aesthetic, art-as-a-verb and art-for-the-people. I wanted my art to breathe the values of indigenous being & spirit. In the tenet of art-as-a-verb, the creation becomes a by product of the more relevant “process”. These principles invite those, who are without education, experience or access to use creative expression, and be present inside the room where we all learn and experience together. The synergy strengthens us all as it predicates the introduction of the creative expression as a “practice” or Creativity as a Spiritual Practice.

My artwork still emphasizes these principles. It has anchored even further into creating connections within the inner soul, expressed as intuition. This happens in tandem with the ascension needed to access the higher self, where we find those wonderful divine insights and inspirations. The insights are our point of departure, the bow of the ship leaving shore.

Creativity as a Spiritual Practice is the culmination and integration of many components I once treated as separate. What differs in the practice is the walk-about. It is a communion and discipline that accesses the deepest of our spiritual being. It is not the easy way. The transcendental nature of the self expression of the soul is a devotional act of the highest art, and many times has no witnesses. Reciting in cadence the Lord’s Prayer 108 times, the intentional geometric arrangement of rocks along the riverbed, the tending to a field of wild flowers, singing a soul loving beautiful song in the echos of a deep cave alone, writing in a journal and so much more.

The practice is expressing the self, the deepest parts of ourselves with authenticity and courage. In a posture of responsibility and an open heart, there is only you and however you define the Most High… the universe, Buddha, creator, motherGod, fatherGod, flow, consciousness. It is sacred space. A communion. The synergy in the activation of high frequency creativity as a co-creator.

Thank you for witnessing the expression of my creativity! My hope is that through the clarity in the connection with my inner life, that we can share in clarity… the peace that comes with insight. And inspire you to create in perceived meaningful, or meaningless ways. Your creative expression holds space, contributes to our greater love, whether or not you share it with another! The process is energetic! The energy of who you are reverberates and activates a higher love and connection within all of us, you are beautiful. Amandla!!!! (Creative power to be free)
